LOCATION: Ideally in-person in Northern Virginia, DC, Maryland, Chicago, or Dallas, but remote applicants will be considered

REPORTING TO: Board of Directors
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time
COMPENSATION: $150,000 - $170,000

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Executive Director (ED) at Penny Appeal USA holds a pivotal responsibility in spearheading and managing the organization's growth and performance, aligning with its strategic objectives. The ED is tasked with advancing the mission of the organization, bolstering Penny Appeal USA’s profile across the United States, and fostering engagement with the global network of Penny Appeal ‘Member’ offices. The position requires dynamic leadership, strategic vision, and a commitment to driving positive impact and sustainable progress in line with Penny Appeal’s philanthropic goals. The ED will play a key role in steering the organization towards greater heights, ensuring its continued success and influence in the charitable landscape.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Provide inspirational, strategic, and operational leadership for all stakeholders of PA USA

2. With the Board, set the strategic direction of the organization

3. Lead the organization to achieve the objectives, actions, and goals outlined in the PA USA strategic plan and any future strategic plans

4. Represent the interests of PA USA to various communities and the humanitarian sector to further the organization’s objectives

5. Continue to grow PA USA’s visibility, reputation, and relevance in the US

6. Represent the strategic and operational interests of PA USA to the broader PA family

Job requirements

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

1. Leadership and management

  • As the highest-ranked executive, take accountability for the leadership and management of all staff
  • Act as the main point of contact and intermediary between governance (Board) and business operations (Executive Team)
  • Lead the staff to achieve agreed actions under the PA USA Strategic Plan
  • Lead and/or facilitate change management strategies across the organizational context

2. Planning and strategic vision

  • Oversee the development and implementation of the annual work plan and budgeting process and engaging the Board as appropriate
  • Monitor operational plans to ensure that organizational objectives and contractual requirements are measured and met
  • Lead the development, implementation, and review of the PA USA Strategy, Program Strategy, and Development Strategy

3. External relationships

  • Be the key contact between PA USA and the communities in which we operate
  • Represent PA USA’s interests with the broader INGO sector including with USAID, InterAction, and Alliance to End Hunger
  • Develop and expand PA USA’s scope of influence within target communities nationwide
  • Lead on the development of strong relationships with all levels of Government in the US and with potential corporate partners

4. Finance and Administration

  • Oversee and ensure effective management of all financial functions of the organization
  • Maintain vigilant oversight of the effective management of all administrative functions of PA USA
  • Operate within the financial delegations of authority to ensure that PA USA is a responsible, transparent, and accountable custodian of donor funds
  • Ensure that PA USA meets its financial and other accountabilities to both Federal and State regulatory bodies

5. Human Resource Management

  • Oversee the organization's responsibilities for effective human resource management
  • Coordinate all recruitment, on-boarding, performance management, and termination processes
  • Oversee administration of the organization’s obligations with respect to payroll, salary packaging, and taxation
  • Ensure that all HR policies and procedures are compliant with Federal and State regulations and best practices, and that they are well-understood and implemented by staff to ensure their health, safety, and well-being

6. Fund Development

  • Continue the growth of Penny Appeal USA by ensuring increased revenue from individual contributions and by successfully applying for funding from foundations, corporations, and institutions

KEY RELATIONSHIPS AND AUTHORITY


  • Close liaison with the PA USA Board
  • Ongoing interaction with PA Global ‘Members’ and other PA affiliates
  • Ongoing development and interaction with the community in which PA USA operates

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS


1. Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications


  • Relevant bachelor’s degree strongly preferred; advanced degree or certifications preferred
  • Knowledge of and experience in the International Humanitarian, Aid, and Development Sectors
  • Strong networking skills to build and manage diverse internal and external relationships
  • An established network of contacts within the American Muslim community and within the larger INGO sector
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with time pressures and managing multiple tasks
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including public speaking and media communications
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and an ability to work with a broad range of people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences

2. Experience

  • At least 5-10 years of senior management experience in a growing organization operating in a continually changing regulatory environment
  • Effective and appropriate engagement with a Board of Directors in the work of an entity
  • Demonstrated successful leadership in the nonprofit sector including demonstrated success in change management
  • Demonstrated success in developing strong donor relationships that result in increased revenue
  • Demonstrated experience in and commitment to working with diverse teams, communities, and audiences
  • Experience collaborating with community organizations to achieve community impact

  • Flexibility, including willingness to work outside traditional office hours as the need requires
  • Ability to travel domestically and overseas as required (approximately 20%)

Note: A strong knowledge and understanding of Islam and the American Muslim Community is essential to this role.
