Job Summary:

The Shelter Advocate in our shelter plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive support and advocacy services to survivors of domestic violence who seek refuge in our shelter. This position is responsible for creating a safe and supportive environment while helping survivors rebuild their lives and regain independence.

Job requirements

Key Responsibilities:

Crisis Intervention and Counseling:

- Provide immediate crisis intervention and emotional support to shelter residents.

- Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to address the trauma and emotional impact of domestic violence.

- Assist survivors in developing safety plans tailored to their specific needs.

Safety Planning:

- Perform safety assessments for shelter residents and develop personalized safety plans.

- Assist survivors in understanding their legal rights and options for protection orders.

- Monitor access to the shelter to prevent potential threats.

Case Management:

- Conduct a thorough intake assessment to understand the survivors’ situation, immediate needs, and long-term goals. This assessment should cover safety concerns, housing, financial stability, emotional well-being, legal issues, and any special considerations (e.g. cultural or language needs.

- Coordinate and facilitate access to essential resources, including medical and mental health services, childcare, and legal assistance.

- Assist survivors in setting goals and accessing appropriate services, including housing, employment, counseling, etc.

Shelter Operations:

- Ensure the shelter environment is safe, welcoming, and supportive for residents.

- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the shelter, including meal planning, security, and resident activities.

Support and Empowerment:

- Foster a sense of community among shelter residents through support groups, workshops, and activities.

- Encourage survivors to develop life skills, self-esteem, and independence.

Record Keeping and Reporting:

- Maintain accurate and confidential records of shelter residents and their progress.

- Prepare regular reports on shelter activities and outcomes for management and funding agencies.

Outreach and Education:

- Participate in community outreach efforts to raise awareness about domestic violence and available resources.

- Collaborate with local organizations to connect survivors with post-shelter support services. 


Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).

- Certification as a Domestic Violence Advocate (CDVA) or work history equivalent preferred.

- Knowledge of domestic violence dynamics, trauma-informed care, and crisis intervention techniques.

- Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and active listening abilities.

- Familiarity with local resources and services for survivors of domestic violence.

- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team and adapt to a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
